The NFL Super Bowl #46 will feature the New York Giants versus the New England Patriots. The sunday game is on February 5th, at Indianapolis, and starts at 6:25PM. This is a reunion of Super Bowl 42, where the championship teams played to 17-14 score, and a Giants victory. This time might be different. However, if the underdog Giants win they will go down as one of the greatest teams in the modern era. Manning has a knack for winning big games. Football fans will be happy to watch this fantastic matchup.

Lake Effect snow has hit Western New York today, with a cold wind and freezing temperatures. The Southtowns and Southern Tier were hit with anywhere from 4 to 10 inches, so far. Several more inches are forecast tonite in the region and into saturday morning. The Chautauqua ridge will likely get hit with the worst of this wintry weather, as it fades into saturday afternoon. Those in ski country, with snowmobiles or sleds, and outdoorsmen will enjoy this weekend, especially after this season's late start. Others are breaking out the shovel, plow, brushes and slowing down in the hazardous driving conditions.

Downtown at the FNC, the Sabres matchup with the Leafs. Perhaps the storm arrival, on this superstitious date, will help the team get a win.

Pipeline - It looks like the hot summer will continue today for the last unofficial blast of heat. The forecast calls for a high in the 80s, and plenty of sun with humidity. The last official day of summer is still three weeks away, on the 22nd. For many workers though, it will be a three day weekend, with a day off on the Labor Day holiday this Monday. Most college students are already back in school for the Fall semester, and for the rest, the vacation will end soon. Bills Fan - The NFL lockout has ended. Training Camp begins friday, for the Buffalo Bills, at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. WNY football fans do not seem that interested in a team that has not made the playoffs in over a decade. The owner, coaches and players don't promote any confidence toward any success either. Ralph Wilson makes his millions yet spends lightly, the coach is a retread, and the team lacks many star players on the field. Consider the recent loss of their best linebacker and lack of any significant other signings. What fan wants to pay big bucks to see these guys continue to lose? Not me, I'll jump back on the wagon if it ever circles a post season berth again. It really is just not that much fun anymore to watch the same old mistakes continue and not have a team that can compete for a championship.

The first Bills pre-season game is at the Chicago Bears on Saturday, August 13th at 8PM.

Weather - Today's high hit 90 degrees in Buffalo. The dew point is oppresive, with the heat index in triple digits, in many locations across WNY. Extreme heat can be dangerous, especially after several days. Many fire companies are opening cooling stations to allow residents to cool down. Plenty of water, fans, AC and shade will help. The mercury will begin to cool and humidity drop this weekend for some relief. The temps are forecast for the low 80s and little rain is expected next week. It certainly has been a hot and dry summer.

Sabres Fan - The Sabres and Amerks are reunited. The deal completes when five million dollars is transfered to the former owner tommorrow. Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula acquired the Rochester Americans for the location, history and to increase development of players in pursuit of the Stanley Cup. This will be the 30th year the teams are affiliated, after a three year seperation. The hockey team seems to be moving in a positive direction ever since the new owner took over Buffalo in February. They recently acquired a veteran defenseman from Calgary, drafted some good prospects and expect to be active in the open free agent market. The upcoming NHL and AHL seasons are becoming very interesting!

Government - Americans rejoice over the historic announcement last night from President Obama that the 911 terrorist Bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. Crowds of New Yorkers gathered to celebrate the news of the murderer whose body was also retrieved by US Forces. This will be a day many will not forget, after a ten year manhunt. Some justice was achieved for those who lost family, friends and fellow citizens. However, the fight is not over in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. The message is clear to our enemies though, you can run and hide, but we will get you no matter how long it takes. God Bless America!

Season Is Over...

Sabres Fan - For the Buffalo Sabres, the fat lady has finally sung. The season ended last night on the road with a 5-2 loss to the 2nd seeded Philadelphia Flyers. Though the series went to a deciding seventh game, it is of little consolation to WNY hockey fans. Same result as last year, a first round exit, and history repeated itself for what has become too many times.

With the late season addition of new owner Terry Pegula there is faith that this may change in the future. However, my feelings are that Regier and Ruff have been here too long and have had enough chances to build a winner and have failed. I don't know if there are any Stanley Cup experience managers out there, but I wish they look around.

As far as the players, the core forwards that produced are Vanek, Roy, Pominville, Stafford and Gaustad. Youth players Ennis, Kaleta, Gerbe, McCormick are keepers. Many veterans are over rated, over paid and under achievers and can go. They are all replaceable: Connolly, Hecht, Boyes, Grier, and Niedermayer.

On defense the best are Myers and Leopold. Weber and Sekera need work but can improve. Montador was fading, Morrison a bust and Butler is not a top six player.

In goal Miller had his moments and did not produce a spectacular season. Enroth shows he is ready to step in as backup. Lalime is finished. The farm has some potential with Mancari, Gragnani and Adams. So its pack up the lockers time and out for some golf. Maybe they can join the last year champion Blackhawks?

Fans Appreciate...

Sabres Fan - The Buffalo Sabres are headed into the playoffs! After defeating the Flyers 4-3 in overtime, friday night at HSBC Arena, they clinched. Gerbe scored two goals, Vanek scored the winner and Miller returned from injury to shutout Philly. Who they play in Round 1 and when won't be known until Sunday evening when the NHL season ends. The team plays its last regular season game tonite, in Columbus at 7PM, and could finish in 6th or 7th in the conference standings.

New owner Terry Pegula celebrated his hockey heaven dream with fans. It began with a huge tailgate party in the plaza, the red carpet return of 80 alumni players and a home victory that clinched a post season berth. The excitement from the team and organization has lifted WNY to a level of joy not seen in many years. Happy days are here again. Go Sabres!

Bisons Fan - Opening Day for the Buffalo Bisons, at Coca-Cola Field, is today at 3:05PM. The Triple "A" affiliate of the New York Mets host the Syracuse Chiefs. Sabres Fan - Rick Martin, the famous winger on the French Connection line of the Buffalo Sabres (1971-81), died in a car crash in Clarence this afternoon. According to several news sources he apparently had a heart attack at the age of 59. Just last week he was reunited with his linemates, Gil and Rene, to greet new owner Terry Pegula on the ice at HSBC Arena. Number 7 will always be remembered as a great goal scorer in team history. A sad day for his family, friends and fans...rest in peace Rico! The Sabres defeated Ottawa, in Buffalo, and the team raised their sticks at center ice to #7s retired jersey in final tribute.

Sabres Fan - The Buffalo Sabres officially announced their new owner, Terry Pegula. The introduction at a news conference this morning was a huge moment in Buffalo sports history. The fourth owner in team history takes control with the mission of winning Stanley Cups for the fans. A very positive development for fans and players. Evaluation, development, investment and a dream await this hockey guy with a passion for the game. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman believes this franchise will be well run in the future and introduced the new owner. Pegula thanked Golisano and Quinn for rescuing the team from bankruptcy eight years ago. He introduced his family and stated Gil Perreault was his hero. Sports - The much hyped NFL Super Bowl XLV game between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburg Steelers lived up to expectations. The Packers won 31-25, at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas to become the first NFC team in the NFL history to win a championship as a sixth seed. A great performance by QB Aaron Rodgers, who was named MVP with 3 touchdowns and over 300 yards passing. The defense made the final stand and the Lombardi Trophy returns to title town.

Sabres Fan - The Buffalo Sabres held a news conference this afternoon to announce the sale of the NHL hockey team. Owner and savior of the team since 2003, Tom Golisano, sold them to Terry Pegula in a $189 million deal. The deal is pending finalization and the trade deadline for players is February 28th. GM Darcy Regier can make moves, but history has proven there's no major moves likely. His contract was recently extended for two years. Coach Ruff is on the last year of his contract. Pegula is an energy company billionaire that many fans hope will take the franchise to the ultimate goal, a championship. Whatever moves the new owner makes, hockey fans can only hope for improvement in the product.

Weather - Many in the country have already experienced the latest wintry blast. Now, Western New York is preparing for a winter storm to arrive this evening. Ten inches, or more, of snow is expected by Wednesday afternoon. So, it's not likely that Dunkirk Dave or Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow, Tuesday morning, on Groundhog Day. During the eleven day hockey tournament, countries will compete for a 100,000 fans who came to Buffalo to party. Sports - WNY football and hockey fans had to wait a long time for this weekend. The Buffalo Sabres defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 at HSBC Arena, in overtime, saturday night. The Buffalo Bills defeated the Detroit Lions 14-12 sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. It was the first home victory for each team this season. The monkey is off the teams back, but does it really matter? Neither team is poised to be a contender in the post season. Questions - The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council current construction project extending the US Route 219 Expressway is nearing completion, of section 5 of 11, from Springville to Asford. The NYS DOT has had landslide trouble at Scoby Hill and have made design changes. Detailed reports are available on their website. Continental 1 is the regions top economic development opportunity for a trade corridor from Toronto to Miami. State officials expect this section to open by Thanksgiving. Travel - The NYS DOT announced the completion of the Buffalo Outer Harbor Parkway Project. The Lake Erie waterfront is transforming to a destination for WNY and visitors. The redesign of Route 5 and Fuhrman Boulevard took about two years and $62 million. Two way traffic now runs from the Coast Guard station to the Union Ship Canal. Bills Fan - Quarterback Trent Edwards, once thought to be the future, was released from the Buffalo Bills (0-3) today. The former third round pick was benched, then released quickly, after winning the pre-season starting job but losing the first two games. Coach Chan Gailey evaluated, that at this point, it was the direction of the future for this football team. The offense was far more effective with Fitzpatrick leading it at New England. Weather - If you like the sun and heat, this summer was for you. This June, July and August have been the hottest in WNY in the last twenty years. Near record temperatures, in the low 90s, will continue into September too. Relief is expected for the Labor Day weekend, with norms in the 70s. Bills Fan - The Buffalo Bills opened the 2010-11 pre-season at the Washington Redskins friday night with a 42-17 blowout loss. Not a surprise to many football fans as the team continues its poor play with penalties, turnovers and injuries. The new coaching, players and systems seem like the same old result, another loss. Yet, the faithful remain hopeful as the regular season begins next month and the end result could show improvement. That's the first thing that came to mind as I heard the news of Bass Pro finally deciding not to build a store in downtown Buffalo. Skeptic WNYers knew all along the politicians who gloated nearly a decade ago would get egg in their face. We'll believe it when we see it. After all this time, hype and press, the inevitable conclusion was the retailer had their chances and it was time to move on. Locals still hope the ECHDC can find a worthy anchor for the waterfront development, that has shown progress and potential. Well, cast again, there's always more fish in the lake!

Bills Fan - The Buffalo Bills opened their 2010 Training Camp at St. John Fisher College, near Rochester, today. The team will hold practices daily and fans can watch for free. Only two players are not expected, veteran defensive lineman Aaron Schobel and first round draft pick CJ Spiller. The battle for the starting quarterback position will likely be the most watched position between Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Brohm. With new coaches, and new players, there is some hope the team can turn around its losing ways. The first pre-season game is at the Washington Redskins on Friday, August 13th at 7:30pm.
